Physiotherapy Services

  • Short answer: 0-3. No guarantees of any direct intervention.
  • Long answer: The service is provided by one kinesiologist who must prioritize and divide his time among the clients who can clearly benefit in terms of maintaining or improving their level of autonomy in mobility and/or self-care.In cases where the kinesiologist expects a reasonable potential for improvement or a need for his intervention for maintenance of the present level of autonomy, he may commit to two to three interventions or less, per week. His commitment is not guaranteed and depends on multiple conditions and criteria in each case.
  • In cases where the kinesiologist’s direct intervention may not be warranted, but the client’s ability to transfer and to walk exists, we have in place the Walking Program under the kinesiologist’s oversight but executed by the nursing staff on the individual units.

  • The recreation and activity department also schedules regular physical activities every week.

  • The kinesiologist does not do any one-on-one interventions but all exercise programs are individualized to the specific needs of each client.

Resident Care

  • Each resident can move freely in our establishment. However, if a resident is at risk of wandering, we have security bracelets and codes on exit doors.
  • Falls are the leading cause of injury among older Canadians. It is estimated that between 20-30% of seniors experience one or more falls each year (Public Health Canada, 2014). At Chateau Westmount, our aim is to help manage the risk of falls while trying to maximize the residents’ autonomy.
  • The occupational therapist works closely with the interdisciplinary team to adapt to the environment, train the residents to use assistive devices, and educate residents, their families, and the staff on ways to reduce the risk of falls.
  • We believe in the minimal use of restraints to prevent falls. When a restraint is necessary to protect the resident against an imminent event, the occupational therapist and care team ensure the protocol is strictly abided by.
  • This protocol combines education, continuous monitoring, and frequent follow-up to ensure the physical restraints are properly installed and that they are not used unnecessarily.
  • Reduced physical capacities can often be compensated using assistive devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, and canes. Navigating all the options on the market can be overwhelming.
  • The occupational therapist can help select the appropriate equipment and teach the residents how to better use them.
  • If eligible, the occupational therapist can help apply for an assistive device under the RAMQ technical aid program.
