Yesterday and today we had discussions with Montreal Public Health and CIUSSS of Central West Montreal about measures in place and possible improvements that could help us break the spread of the outbreak.

The findings of these two organizations showed that the measures put in place respected good infection prevention practices. Some changes to the display or concerning the elements used to separate the different areas were made as a result of the recommendations we received.

We looked at different scenarios for grouping clients according to their time spent in isolation. We concluded that the creation of zones on the affected units was the most viable because it maintained the level of services and insured an optimal quality of care.

So tomorrow we will bring together positive residents in two new areas on the 4^th and 5^th. The deconfinement already begun on the 3^rd floor will also continue.

We would like to thank CIUSSS for its support, both operationally and in terms of planning.

Following the last screening, we received 10 new positive results. We also have several residents who have completed their 10-day quarantine period without experiencing symptoms.

We try to minimize the impact on our residents, especially for those who have to temporarily move to another room. We try to contact all the families of the resident who have received positive results every day. If we have not been able to reach you during the day, we are sorry, please contact us.

We ask other families to be patient as we may not be able to respond to you with the diligence you are used to.

Following the screening we did on the 2^nd floor after a case was detected we had results that may seem alarming at first.

Almost all of the 2^nd floor came back positive (20 residents out of 28). This does not surprise us considering the type of clientele. Indeed, the majority of our 2nd-floor residents are loving people who like to touch others and walk around a lot. It should be taken into account that only one of them has symptoms.

The 2^nd floor is therefore considered a large hot zone and we proceed in reverse isolation for the 8 “unaffected” residents.

We also have a case on the 5^th floor. We have tested the entire 5^th floor today and we will have more information tomorrow.

We have put in place measures to reduce the risk of spread, including the use of plastic cutlery.

We had a meeting with Montreal Public Health today. They came to assess the situation and make suggestions to help shorten the duration of the outbreak. We have a video conference scheduled tomorrow with CIUSSS to discuss options. Once a common strategy has been established, we will keep you informed.

We have had a total of 5 deaths out of 55 positive residents since the outbreak began. Some people contacted us to ask why there were differences between our numbers and those of the government.

The government’s figures reflect yesterday’s situation. I pass on the situation as of the day I send the post on the blog. In the head of the post, you find the active case figures only.

Yesterday we screened the 3^rd and 4^th as well as the employees in general.

We have a lot fewer positive cases on the 4^th floor than we expected.

We moved some residents to accommodate the three new positive residents in the 4^th floor’s hot zone.

We also received two new positive results on the 3^rd. This will unfortunately delay the decontamination of the unit; it was originally planned for next week. On the other hand, 4 other residents have completed their isolation period. We only have 9 residents of the 3^rd who have not yet been repatriated to their respective rooms.

We hope to be able to close the 3^rd floor’s hot zone in the week of December 7th and proceed with the total disinfection of the unit.

Once again, it is with sadness that I announce an additional death. Our condolences and thoughts go out to family and friends.

We also had a few more employees who tested positive. However, many are already back at work.

All in all, all is going well. Next week, we will continue to proactively screen other units (2^nd and 5^th).

We had a very busy weekend and a busy start to the week. Last Saturday and Sunday we repatriated the residents of the Oasis in the new red zone created on the 3^rd floor.

We have also begun to transfer residents who have completed their isolation period to the cold zone because they are no longer contagious. In addition, many of our employees have begun their return to work.

We also created a red zone on the 4^th floor because we detected 3 new cases. This, alas, is not a surprise because the resident who tested positive was doing a lot of wandering.

The news is good because few of our residents are symptomatic. Most have only a simple cough.

However, it is with great sadness that we must announce a third death. We extend our deepest condolences to the family. Our thoughts are with them.

Tomorrow, we retest the 4^th floor and the seven residents of the 3^rd who had tested negative previously. This will allow us to plan the deconfinement of the 3^rd and to evaluate the spread to the 4^th.

This week we conducted prevalence screening on all units (including the 3^rd).).

We had new cases on the 3^rd and to our surprise, we had 1 case on the 4^th. All new cases are asymptomatic.

This resident was transferred to the 3^rd in the red zone. As a precaution, we placed the 4^thfloor in preventive isolation. Residents will be confined to their rooms for the weekend and screening is scheduled for early this week.

We have also reached an agreement with an external company to disinfect the common areas on the 4^th floor. This company specializing in this area will support our housekeeping and maintenance team, which has been making extraordinary efforts since the beginning of this outbreak.

We plan tomorrow, close the Oasis and repatriate residents to the 3^rd floor. This will allow for better workforce management. Unfortunately, we will have to move some of them to rooms other than theirs for a short time because we will have to create two zones (hot and cold).

We will update you on developments as soon as the information is available.

We have good and bad news today.

Let’s start with the good ones. Some employees and residents arrive within their 10-day quarantine and do not show symptoms.

These employees will soon be reinstated to work. Residents will soon be able to return to their floors.

The criteria for employees:

10-day quarantine, AND
48 without symptoms (except cough as it will persist for some time)

For residents:

10-day quarantine, AND
48 without symptoms (except cough as it will persist for some time)
Clinical improvement in the last 24 hours

We had two new cases added today.

Unfortunately, we must also announce a second death. We extend our sincere condolences to family and friends.

Tomorrow, we retest the entire centre for routine screening. This should confirm that there was no contamination outside the 3^rd floor and that the outbreak was contained.

We are talking about containing the outbreak even though we have new cases because the incubation period for the virus varies from 6 to 12 days. It is very likely that new positive residents that showed up in the last few days were infected before isolation protocols were put in place.

Good news, today no new cases. Everything stays stable.

We will be conducting the 2^nd screening on floors 2, 4, and 5 this week.

Since our residents are stable in the red zone, we are beginning to consider deconfining some of them. We will soon be able to start looking at whether any of them meet the criteria to lift the isolation.

We still have problems with the phone in the Oasis. The provider of our telephone service should come in the next few days to find a solution. We apologize for the inconvenience this creates for our residents and their families.

The situation continued to change over the weekend. We have a few more cases. However, we are still in the incubation period of the virus. It is therefore quite possible that we will see the positive results of infected people before we put the entire 3^rd floor in isolation.

The good news, no cases outside the ^3rd. This shows that the measures instituted have worked. We do not take anything for granted and that is why we will be re-screening residents on the 2^nd, 4^th, and 5^th floors soon.

We must also, unfortunately, confirm that one person has died as a result of COVID-19. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family.

Since we had new cases, we converted a section of the 3^rd floor into a COVID unit to better help manage positive cases without impacting the quality of care. This will allow us a better distribution of equipment and manpower.

The situation continues to move in the right direction.

Although we have 2 other residents who have developed symptoms and have tested positive, no other residents show symptoms on the other floors. This confirms that we managed to contain the outbreak to the 3^rd.

We have rounded up all the positive residents at the RC in the Oasis. This will allow us to plan for better quarantine of the 3^rd floor and easier access to ambulance services if one of the positive residents needs transportation to a hospital.

Tomorrow we are screening employees who were not considered contact.

Our residents are doing well and so are our employees.

A big «High five» to the maintenance team for the great work they have done. Each resident was transported in respect of precautionary measures and the elevators were completely disinfected between each transport.

We are not giving up and we keep our spirits up. Thank you all for your support.

Yesterday we screened all the residents from the unaffected floors.

The Jewish hospital where we send the tests still has difficulty transmitting the results following the cyberattack against them. However, we were always informed immediately by phone when we had a positive result.

We are therefore confident, although we will have to wait for the results by fax before officially announcing, that we have no other case in the facility.

We will bring together positive residents at the Oasis. We have created a temporary zone for COVID. These transfers will take place as soon as the area is fully equipped, and staff has been designated (probably today).

Screening of remaining employees (not in contact with the 3^rdfloor’s resident) will take place on Thursday and Friday.

We would like to thank the Château’s teams for their magnificent work and immeasurable efforts.

We would also like to thank you for your patience and cooperation. We know that these are difficult and stressful times. We do our best to keep you informed in a transparent manner regarding all developments but our actions are primarily for the physical and psychological well-being of our residents.
